Love a good curry but don’t know how to make your own paste? Or maybe, like me, you just don’t have the time?
Fear not because help is at hand. I love all these companies that deliver fresh food straight to your door – Hello Fresh, Fresh Fitness Food, and a new fresh curry paste company that I discovered last week called Mister Paste.
A former work colleague told me about Mister Paste (it’s her partner’s business) and she asked if I would like to try out some of their products – of course I said yes! 🙂
1) because I love food and 2) because helping out other small businesses is a good thing
She sent me a link to her partner’s website and I checked out the large range of pastes and sauces available. The site was really easy to navigate around and I was surprised with how cheap the pastes were as they’re made fresh. I chose the portion option for two people as I knew LO and Baby Girl would just be eating from our portion.
So I chose two curry pastes that I am very fond of; Thai Green Curry and Rogan Josh. For me, the balance of spices, sweetness and saltiness has to be on point in order for me to consider the recipe being a fantastic one. I had very high expectations for these curry pastes that I was going to try.
It’s Shrove Tuesday today aka Pancake Day and what better way to enjoy this day than bake up a fresh batch of pancakes to enjoy with the family… or all by yourself. 🙂
I’ve got TWO amazingly simple recipes for you today; the first one is a chocolate protein pancake one that I’ve dressed with a low-calorie mint choc ice cream and dark chocolate drizzle, and the second is a simple oat pancake with coconut yoghurt and berries. Yum!!
Since I started my fitness journey last August 2016 I’ve been eating much healthier than before. I’ve cut out a lot of the processed foods I used to eat before and try to consciously opt for complex carbohydrates over simple carbs. The reason for this is because of my high-risk for developing Type II Diabetes later in life. Diabetes runs in my family, both on my maternal and paternal side then to top it off I had Gestational Diabetes in both pregnancies.
So yeah… really high risk.
I am human and sometimes I do slip up and have chocolates, cakes and biscuits but try to have a really small portion. After all, eating a healthy diet doesn’t mean eliminating treats 100% out of your diet. Healthy eating is about balance, sustainability and having a positive association with food. Basically if you eat a large slice of pizza (or the whole pizza), don’t put yourself on a massive guilt trip for it and ‘punish yourself’ by eating less the next day or putting your body through hours of cardio trying to ‘burn off’ the added calories. Instead acknowledge that you’ve been able to enjoy yourself that day with that meal and eat a little better the week ahead to balance it out. Remember, one pizza won’t make you fat nor will one salad make you healthy.
I’m currently increasing my calorie intake to build up my muscle size and strength. As my weight loss stalled in December (plateaued at 51.8kg despite me increasing workouts and cutting a few more calories) I decided to reverse diet (where your aim is to gradually add back the cals in an attempt to kickstart your metabolism) which is going well. Everybody loves M&S Foods, it’s a well-known fact. I’ve yet to hear someone telling me that they don’t like their food or drink. When I found out that Marks and Spencer were returning to Woolwich I was so happy. I’ve only been a Greenwich Mummy for a couple of years, I’ve actually been a Plumstead Common/Woolwich resident for over a decade so knew the old M&S store very well. I was very fond of it too, as was my dad.
When LO was born, we were still living in Plumstead Common. It’s not the greatest area to live in and the estate was practically derelict but the one thing it had a lot of was the sense of belonging – feeling like a part of a community. Something a lot of these flashy new-build flats and estates lack. Anywho, for as long as I can remember there was always a Marks and Spencer in Woolwich so when it closed its doors in 2014, we all felt a little very disappointed.

Last Wednesday 7th December 2016 at 10am M&S store manager, Calvin Sheridan reopened the doors of the high street store. What I loved most about this reopening was that a lot (maybe even the majority) of the staff members were from the original store that closed down. To me that demonstrates that M&S cares for the community and its employees. As an ex-M&S Foods employee, it makes me happy to know that the values and ethics of the company are still be upheld by new management.
Do you find it hard to get all those healthy nutrients into your children? Or perhaps you have a fussy eater on your hands that prefers to snack more than eat proper meals? If the answer was yes to either of these questions then we’re in the same boat! *phew!*
LO is a super fussy eater and I have found it incredibly as he got older to make him eat well and healthily. The boy loves to snack and barely eats decent-sized meals. The only meal that he actually eats really well is breakfast (he has oats porridge with whole milk and no sugar) … but even then I have to feed him… at 3 years old! Don’t get me wrong, he can feed himself but it takes him forever to finish a bowl that I can give him in under 10 mins. I really need to stop. I’m just making a rod for my own back by doing it but I blame Daddy P for reverting my baby-led weaning to spoon-feeding when he turned 18 months… this is something we are NOT going to go through with Baby Girl I can assure you!
As I said, LO loves snacks but the majority of his snacks involves processed foods such as crisps, jaffa cakes and sweets. Occasionally he will ask for the odd fruit (usually banana or apple) or some fromage frais or cheese on toast aka “cheesy bread”. I really want to offer him something more healthy and nutritious for his snack options. When MyProtein got in touch with me I was absolutely thrilled! Sugar is one of the main contributors of child obesity but sometimes it’s hard to believe how much sugar is in everything! When it comes to our little ones we want them to have the best possible upbringing – this includes everything from what they do to what they eat. Of course if they fancy a McDonalds meal every now and then it wouldn’t hurt but imagine if they wanted it everyday – then an occasional treat becomes something else.
Now that I have become very conscious of what I eat and try to eat healthy, I’ve seen how much sugar is added to our foods. Even foods that people consider ‘healthy’ such as those delicious Nakd bars made with real fruits and nuts are super high in sugar (dried fruit is incredibly high in sugar).
You know those lovely little packs of raisins you like to give to your little one’s or add them to their lunchbox? Yeah, you should stop that… or just give them dried fruit occasionally.
I used to be guilty of giving LO lots of dried fruit too. People tend to forget that fruit can have an incredibly high sugar content. Okay, it’s fruit is healthy and yes it is a natural sugar blah blah but at the end of the day… it’s still sugar. Your body doesn’t know the difference between artificial sugar and natural sugar and if you’re diabetic your blood glucose levels will shoot through the roof if you have too much of either of them. Sweeteners on the other hand is a different story. Your body doesn’t recognise it as a sugar so it doesn’t affect your blood glucose levels hence why lots of kids drinks are now labeled as ‘sugar-free’ as the sugar has been swapped for a sweetener. Stevia and inulin are the new “healthier” sweeteners people are reaching out to. They are naturally derived from plant extracts making them a better option because they’re not artificially made.
