The Blogmas Edit: an interview with SarahLou Writes

The Greenwich Mummy | UK Family Lifestyle blogger

Only two more sleeps to go! #christmasiscoming

Today I’ve got for us mummy blogger, Sarah from SarahLou Writes. She tells us what the true meaning of Christmas should be and what ‘The Grumpy Guide to Christmas’ is all about…

1. WHAT’S THE BEST – OR WORST – CHRISTMAS PRESENT YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

The best present I’ve ever been given was weirdly a hair dryer, which sounds so silly but I genuinely needed and wanted one, I still use it to this day.

2. NAME SOMETHING ABOUT CHRISTMAS THAT MOST PEOPLE LIKE, BUT YOU HATE (OR AT LEAST DISLIKE)

Christmas Pudding and Mince pies, I don’t know why, I am not overly keen on fruity cake and honestly after the heavy main meal having something equally heavy for pudding hurts my tum!

3. WHAT HOLIDAY MOVIE OR SPECIAL DO YOU WATCH OVER AND OVER AGAIN?

The Grumpy Guide to Christmas. I watched it once on DAVE and it’s the thing I love to watch this time of year, oh and Muppets Christmas Carol! We save that for Christmas Eve!

4. WHAT’S THE WEIRDEST/UGLIEST CHRISTMAS DECORATION YOU’VE EVER OWNED?

I don’t think I have any weird or ugly ones; I have plenty of homemade ones but I wouldn’t describe them as weird haha!

5. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS SONG?

Step into Christmas by Elton John and Merry Christmas everyone by Shakin’ Stevens

6. IF YOU COULD TRAVEL TO ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD FOR CHRISTMAS, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?

Somewhere where it snows this time of year, I want that magical wake up on Christmas morning to a white Christmas. I can dream!

7. WHAT’S YOUR LEAST FAVOURITE ITEM ON YOUR CHRISTMAS TO-DO LIST?

Clean up! Everything looks so pretty until the mess gets created and needs cleaning!

8. IF SOMEONE OFFERED YOU A GIFT CARD TO ANY STORE YOU WANTED, WHICH ONE WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

Lush I think, or The Body Shop

9. WOULD YOU RATHER BUILD A SNOWMAN, GO SLEDDING, HAVE A SNOWBALL FIGHT, OR STAY INSIDE DRINKING HOT COCOA?

Can I do all three? That sounds like the makings of a perfect day to me!

10. NAME THREE WORDS THAT BEST DESCRIBE CHRISTMAS FOR YOU.

Family, Food, Fun

*BONUS QUESTION* THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS IS…

Family, the most important thing is who is around the tree and not what’s under it!

The Blogmas Edit: an interview with Jupiter Hadley

The Greenwich Mummy | UK Family Lifestyle blogger

Welcome to the The Blogmas Edit’s first interview! Today, I’ve got for us the lovely lifestyle blogger Jupiter from Jupiter Hadley. She tells us the real reason why she doesn’t like snow and more about those funky lava lights…

1. WHAT’S THE BEST – OR WORST – CHRISTMAS PRESENT YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

Many of my Christmas gifts have been very functional. No one has really messed up when it comes to giving me gifts, as I tend to very much explain what I would like, as gifts should actually be something you’d like. The best gift I have ever had was a few years back, I had just moved into a small flat, and had been given a grow-your-own chili pepper plant thing. We planted the chilies and watched them grow, then ate them. They didn’t last another year, but it was a great little experience that I wasn’t expecting! The chilies were really good too.

2. NAME SOMETHING ABOUT CHRISTMAS THAT MOST PEOPLE LIKE, BUT YOU HATE (OR AT LEAST DISLIKE)

I don’t like snow. I know in England you don’t get much snow, but in America (where I grew up) we got a lot of snow. It’s pretty, I’ll admit it, but it’s not fun. Snow is so cold! It gets dirty and black so fast. In England, even the littlest bit of snow just makes everything in London break down – from trains not running to traffic piling up. It’s not beautiful enough to outweigh all of it’s negatives!

3. WHAT HOLIDAY MOVIE OR SPECIAL DO YOU WATCH OVER AND OVER AGAIN?

This may sound really silly, but I tend to watch American claymation films from the 1970s. My two favorites are Santa Clause is Coming to Town which tells the story of a king banning toys, so Kris Kringle creates and delivers them in a mysterious way, with a penguin side kick and A Year Without Santa Clause, which is about Santa taking a break for a year and the two seasons (Heat and Snow) fighting over control of the Earth. This one has a classical song called Heat Miser/Snow Miser which all of my family knows from heart.

4. WHAT’S THE WEIRDEST/UGLIEST CHRISTMAS DECORATION YOU’VE EVER OWNED?

The weirdest Christmas Decoration I own are these little lava lamp-looking lights that go on the tree. They are SUPER DELICATE and were passed down from my parents. They are called Retro Christmas Bubble Light Bulb String Lights – see photo below:

5. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS SONG?

Oh it’s going to have to be Heat Miser/Snow Miser.

6. IF YOU COULD TRAVEL TO ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD FOR CHRISTMAS, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?

Probably Spain. I really love Spain and it’s not too cold there.

7. WHAT’S YOUR LEAST FAVOURITE ITEM ON YOUR CHRISTMAS TO-DO LIST?

This is a pretty hard question! I really like decorating, wrapping gifts, baking cookies, and purchasing gifts. I guess my least favorite item (this might be a cop-out) is cleaning up after Christmas dinner or cookie decorations!

8. IF SOMEONE OFFERED YOU A GIFT CARD TO ANY STORE YOU WANTED, WHICH ONE WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

Lush – always can use more bath bombs!

9. WOULD YOU RATHER BUILD A SNOWMAN, GO SLEDDING, HAVE A SNOWBALL FIGHT, OR STAY INSIDE DRINKING HOT COCOA?

I’d much rather stay inside drinking hot cocoa and looking at the snow from a distance.

10. NAME THREE WORDS THAT BEST DESCRIBE CHRISTMAS FOR YOU.

Festive, Food, Chilly.

*BONUS QUESTION* THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS IS…

Family, friends, and good food.

The #ArtyProject: Update 3

The Greenwich Mummy | The #ArtyProject

The Arty Project

It has been soooooo long since my last update – I really apologise to everyone for such a quiet couple of weeks. It’s been too stressful at home and I just haven’t been able to get around to blogging. I did book a couple of days off to go Cornwall which I will be posting about shortly.

So just to recap for everyone who has forgotten, The #ArtyProject was initially set up by two beauty bloggers who had a passion for art and felt like they wanted to get back into their “creative mode” and do something wonderful whilst including others within the blogging community. Take a look below for links to other members who are taking part in this wonderful project.

Where I am now?

The project is almost approaching the end and I think I started off so well but a little lost now, especially where I have been away from my computer and away from my sketch book. I don’t have much to show for this update unfortunately but have been playing around with tweaking images. The modified images represent how I would like to look as opposed to how I actually look.

I am very interested in plastic surgery and would consider going under the knife to look ‘more beautiful’. However, despite the desire to have plastic surgery, I wouldn’t like to have extreme plastic surgery where the surgery completely alters my face. I am still a big fan of the natural look and think that have surgery to enhance my look is not a bad thing IMO.

Here’s an image I have been working on recently. I don’t have fancy software or PhotoShop so please excuse the “rawnwss” of the edited image 🙂 I quite like it – it looks quite quirky and looks like it could’ve been a collage of my face (you all know how much I love collages right?!)

The Greenwich Mummy | ArtyProject Update 3

How I look Vs How I want to look...

As you can see, I made the eyebrows thicker and more arched, and my eyes are larger than normal. I have also made my nose smaller and thinner around the nostril area as I think a narrow higher nose is very attractive. I elongated my face by giving me a smaller and slightly longer chin to change the face shape from oblong to oval. Fuller lips are all the craze at the moment; just look at Kylie Jenner’s lips – they’re the talk of the town at the moment, and before her it was the likes of Angelina Jolie, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, etc. I am not “obsessed” enough to even think about doing that silly Kylie Jenner shot-glass suction thing that I keep seeing everywhere on Instagram… I will leave that to others.

Most of these features are supposed to be desirable in Asian cultures. Within my own family, many of these features have been drummed into my brain as symbols of beauty so it’s what I personally see as beautiful and by having the features would mean that I am beautiful too.

As I was creating this image, I noticed that when I made just the lips fuller, everything else looked so out of proportion however once I started tweaking the nose and everything else, it looked a bit better. Although, the longer I stare at the altered image, the more I realise how distorted my face looks and weirdly out of proportion it is… I also can’t help thinking that my altered face really looks like how Kylie Jenner looks (i.e. larger eyes, fuller lips) – is it just me or can you see the resemblance too? I’m going to try and do another update with more images of my work before the final piece is due (approx next week!).

The #ArtyProject: Update 1

The Greenwich Mummy | The #ArtyProject

You may remember a post I did almost two weeks ago on joining a wonderful new blog project called the #ArtyProject – it was started by two bloggers who shared a love for art and wanted to get back into the swing of creating something wonderful so the #ArtyProject was born.

The theme chosen to start of the series was ‘Beauty’ and we were allowed to choose any medium we wish and take it from any angle we liked as long as it is based on beauty. I gave you a sneaky peak in my first intro post (click here) on what direction I’ll be taking and now I can finally reveal what I have been up to since the project was started on April 3rd 2015.

Collages & Skteches
I love starting off all of my projects with collages from magazine cuttings and observational drawings or in this case a pen sketch.

The collage of natural faces are what I think beauty is all about. I think that being beautiful should mean to be natural and feel comfortable in your own ‘skin’. The models in the collages obviously have makeup on which is completely reasonable as the look is minimal and natural so it doesn’t look overdone. My beauty look is very similar – always natural and simple because (1) I like it that way and (2) I really don’t have the time for a full face of makeup and contouring on a daily basis.

The pen sketch is an observational drawing from a photo I have of myself. The text around the drawing are my personal thoughts on why I wear makeup and what make up means to me. I also talk about what is ‘beautiful’ in Asian culture; i.e. bigger eyes, lighter skin and higher noses are all facial qualities that the majority of Asians want to have and sometimes will turn to surgery to get that look to be “beautiful”. I would love to be able to paint something but I’m not a great painter so expect to see more sketches, photographs, and collages… maybe I will treat you guys to a painting if it’s good enough!

I haven’t picked up a paintbrush for over 6 years… maybe it’s time then, I guess

I did want to go down the route on body beautiful but I think I will see how it goes – like I said in my introductory post, I want my ideas to grow as I progress so nothing is set in stone – I want to let my ideas bloom and see what path it creates for itself instead. 🙂

Here’s another collage of some inspirational images for the next step in my project and a sneaky peek of what’s next to come.

The #ArtyProject

Join in the #ArtyProject and reconnect with your inner artist

It’s been soo long since I’ve last created anything artistic – the closest thing to creativity that I have done so far is my blogging which is kind of saddening in a way. I’ve been having this feeling for the past months and I’ve had numerous discussions with an old art colleague who said she also felt the same. Then, a couple of days ago I came across a tweet by Maryam calling for others to join in this new and exciting project so I had to check out her blog.

artyproject-tweet

After reading the brief, I decided to take part and sent my email to Maryam who contacted Zoe on my behalf and voila – here we are! The girls have also started a Whatsapp Community so all of the bloggers can chat, share ideas and encourage each other to persevere, or in my case, to start on our project! 🙂

So what is the #ArtyProject?

It’s the brainchild of bloggers, Zoe and Vicky. Every 2 months a theme is chosen and at the end of it all, the blogger gets a chance to show off their final piece by blogging about it (remember to use the hashtag #ArtyProject). Every two weeks, a “progress report” should be uploaded so everyone can see we’re doing and encourage each other along if we’re feeling stuck. The progress update can be anything from a sketchbook idea, research, or actually sneak preview of the final piece. In terms of medium, there are no restrictions in terms what to use so it’s completely free reign (woop woop!). The first final piece is due around June 3rd 2015 – so exciting!

Who can join in?

Anyone can join in! You don’t have to be an artist, or have an artistic background. As long as you want to do something creative you can participate – it’s supposed to be a fun thing so there is no right or wrong way to be creative. If you would like to take part, please leave a comment below or contact Zoe or Vicky.

Here are some of the lovely ladies already on the project. Check out their pages for inspiration and also to see what they’re getting up to with theirs;

Zoe | Vicky | Maryam | Annabel | Danielle
Milli | Sarah | Uli | Clara | Emma | Jho

What is the theme?

As the majority of us bloggers are from a beauty background, it would only be natural to mark the start of something wonderful around/on ‘Beauty’… How we decide to interpret it is completely up to us so I think we will have some really mixed pieces and varied ideas. 🙂

My Idea?

So after a bit of mind-mapping last night (my creativity usually comes to me in the early hours of the morning) I have found something that I would love to do my project on but I am not going to restrict myself. Instead, I will allow my ideas to blossom as I go through the project and simply just refine it and gently direct it along. Most of the research and ideas will be on paper; I will be using mixed media so expect to see drawings, paintings, collages and photography (camera and digital) in the mix.

Here’s a sneaky peek of what is in store…
